My darling wife gave me a SEIKO SPB155-1J "Baby Alpinist" as a Christmas gift about a year and a half ago. Out of the box, it was losing about 16 seconds per day, according to my iPhone. As it was under warranty, there was no charge, just one-way shipping (about $16). It took a few weeks, but I got it back, and the first da of checking, it lost one second. The second day, it lost 22 seconds and has been in that ball park ever since. I have heard that the 6R35 is a temperamental movement, but I have never dropped it or given it a sharp shock of any kind. The serial number matches the one on the box, so I don't think they swapped it out. Anyway, SEIKO USA was very polite over the phone and they were as timely as any other company. Most of the time, I wear a Hamilton Khaki Field (gains about 2-3 seconds per day), but I still wear that SEIKO now and again. It's beautiful, and I'm trying to train myself not to be so anal-retentive. I carry an iPhone around, for cryin' out loud!!

Watch collection is sheer stupidity. Funny, out of context prices for somthing men made, artificial rarity, to create demand. No purpose other than showing time, quite often less accurate than far cheaper competition. And above all utterly frustrating and costly when in need of repair.

Never again Omega ! The first time I used my SeaMaster Planet Ocean in the pool, it ended up with water inside. 14000 Euro for a diving watch which is not even waterproof ??? Omega is blacklisted for me and I am a watch collector. Omega clearly have quality issues.

I appreciate your candor, and as a 5 Omegas owner, I have to say, to me it is the best bang for the buck at the plus 5K range - but, that is my opinion, and Omega isn't for everyone, and that makes them all the more special. Thank you for the video.

Omega's problem is that much of their design language doesn't hold up over time. Take, for example, the Seamaster with the helium escape valve. It's a design that hasn't aged well; it looks old in a bad way. It's also huge, and the bracelet is tacky, and so on. The Aqua Terra and Speedmaster are the only watches that have good designs, in my opinion. Their movements are great, though.

Grand Seiko dive watches are meant to be chunky. I think it is a design decisions by GS. Would like to see them show off their craftsmanship in a diver at similar proportions to a submariner. But I don't think that is what GS is trying to do...copy a sub.

Sad to say this but Omega has been testing the water for too long. What i mean by that is, it keeps releasing different products to the market to see consumer's feedback rather than using data and R&D to release what the consumers really want. If you disagree with this comment, I think you really don't understand how many watches/variations Omega has released in the past 10 years.

Just to note: I enquired at OMEGA store about how much trade in cost they would give for a one month old unworn Seamaster 300M. They said they would offer 1/3 of the price if I traded it in for another watch. That may help you understand the real value of the watches. Hence why initial resale value is so poor for OMEGA watches.

I have over 10 Omegas. Vintage ones from the 1960s, and a couple of neo vintages ones (sword hands divers, first AT). All bought preowned obviously. I would never buy Omega new. I like the AT small seconds blue on rubber, and it is on my wish list, but again preowned will be the way. I bought my AT first iteration blue 39 mm auto for less than 2K preowned. Look at retail prices today, it's just unreasonable.

The brand delivers amazing quality, but if you want one then just wait a bit and buy it on the gray market. I bought a brand new 2 tone Aqua Terra for 45% off retail. You can get pretty much any Omega model for around 30-45% off if you know where to look.

My first luxury watch was the Aqua Terra blue dial last year and felt it was too heavy,so changed my strap to an Artem strap and made it lighter. I then picked up my Rolex submariner Starbucks after waiting 10 months. It wears 10 times better on the wrist and it’s not top heavy.

Great video! I recently bought the new Explorer 36mm. Initially, I wanted to get an Aqua Terra, but they are just too shiny for my taste. I love the first edition of the Aqua Terra, which wasn’t shiny and had the same tool watch vibe as the Explorer. However, I ultimately wanted a modern watch, and the first edition of the AT, being 20 years old, doesn't have the same quality feel as contemporary models. I love Omega and appreciate that the brand isn’t associated with flaunting wealth, as Rolex unfortunately, and perhaps unfairly, is. However, I think Omega’s design language is a bit stuck in the 90s. Why don’t they tap into their rich back catalogue? They could take some cues from Tudor, who have nailed it with their recent releases. While Omega did release the Seamaster 300, it's too shiny and lacks the tool-like appeal. I understand this is probably what the market wants, but with so many releases, surely they could cater to vintage-loving enthusiasts who don’t want the hassles of owning vintage watches. Tudor has shown there is a market for this.

Great video John, I am a huge fan of Omega and own several pieces. However, my gripe with Omega is that they really haven’t released anything of note in the past few years. Releasing new dial colors and limited editions is getting a bit stale. They need to overhaul the Seamaster line and give people what they want. The brand is becoming more like Breitling by flooding their catalog with so many options and sizes that people are looking else where. Omega needs to clean up their offerings and discontinue lines that are struggling. I feel that Omega is too comfortable where they are at in the watch industry, likely why Cartier bumped them out of the second spot. Not going there with the Rolex comparisons, but I think Tudor is a more exciting brand than Omega at the moment.

Rolex is all about “value retention”. A big part of crowd buying Rolex for that reason, not bcuz they truly love Rolex watches. Like if Rolex resale value if were like Omega, they’ll prob choose differently. They like the idea of out winning the world on resale value and truth is when you go to dealers trying to sell your unused Rolex, they’ll only give you half to 60% of that value. Those prices you see are for dealers only, you’ll be lucky to get your full money back. Omega owners you love it now, you can buy it now. No games.

This talk about loss of value comes from "enthusiasts" on youtube that are not real enthusiasts, they are ALL gray market retailers trying to make a buck and saying "never buy new" to help their businesses.
